Description

The Virginia State seal consists of the goddess "Virtus" holding a long spear and a sword, underneath the foot of Virtus is Tyranny, a golden crown, broken chain and a whip held by Tyranny, and the motto, "Sic Semper Turannis".
The seal is a symbol of peace which depicts the Roman virtue of Virtus.
The spear and sword symbolize victory.
Tyranny symbolizes the state's defeat to Great Britain.
The crown signifies the end of Britain's sovereignty.
The broken chain and whip are a representation of the freedom of Virginia from Britain's control of trade and expansion and the state's freedom from Britain's acts of punishment.
The motto means "Thus always to Tyrants".
