Description

The Vermont State Flag formally adopted in June 1923 displays the coat of arms and motto, "Freedom and Unity" and consists of a pine tree, cow, and sheaves of wheat, pine needles, and a deer head. The pine tree represents the abundant Vermont forests. The cow and sheaves of wheat represent the dairy and agriculture industries of the state, which played a major role in the state throughout history. The pine needles represent the pine branches worn at the battle of Plattsburgh near the end of the 1812 War. The deer head represents Vermont's wildlife.
