Description

The South Carolina State Seal was adopted in 1776. It features two elliptical areas. On the left oval is a palmetto tree springs from a fallen oak tree symbolizing the British ships that South Carolina patriots defeated at Sullivan's Island in 1776. The word under the tree trunk, "ANIMIS OPIBUSQUE PARATI" means "Prepared In Mind and Resources". On the right oval is the goddess Spes symbolizing hope and the laurel branch in her hand symbolizes victory. The word "DUM SPIRO SPERO" means "While I breathe, I hope".
