Description

The South Carolina State Flag was adopted in 1861, and consists of the crescent moon and the palmetto tree. The crescent moon represents the uniforms of State troops during the revolutionary war. The palmetto tree is a symbol of Colonel Moultrie's heroic defense of the palmetto-log fort on Sullivan's Island versus the attack of the British soldiers also, as the state tree.
