The Northern Mariana Islands Flag was adopted in July 1985 and consists of a blue field, a white star superimposed on a gray latte stone surrounded both by a traditional Carolinian mwaar.
The blue color symbolizes the Pacific Ocean and the Mariana Trench.
The star symbolizes protection from the United States.
The gray stone symbolizes the traditional foundation stone used in building by Chamorro people.
The mwaar is an element of the native Carolinian culture.
