Description

The Massachusetts State Seal was adopted by Governor John Hancock and was made official by the General Court in June 1885. It features the arms of the Commonwealth surrounded by the words " Sigillum Reipublicæ Massachusettensis" Latin for "Seal of the Republic of Massachusetts". It consists of a shield in a blue field background with a native American holding a bow in his right hand and an arrow pointing downward which indicates peacefulness. A silver star with five points above his right arm represents Massachusetts as one of the original 13 states.
