Description
The Maryland State Seal was adopted in 1876. Only the reverse of the Great seal is used officially, it features a plowman, a fisherman, and a shield with Maryland's coat of arms. The phrase encircling the seal reads, "Scuto bonæ voluntatis tuæ coronasti noss" is the Latin for "With favor wilt thou compass us as with a shield." The state motto, "Fatti maschii, parle femine" is the Italian for "Manly deeds, womanly words" commonly termed as "Strong deeds, gentle words".
