Description
The Maine State Seal was adopted in June 1820. The design is conceptualized by Benjamin Vaughan. It features a Farmer and Sailor a symbol of pride in Maine's agricultural roots and the State's strong connection to the sea. Inside the Shield features several images including a Pine tree and Moose-deer which represents the State and the native animal of the state respectively. The North star above Maine's motto, "DIRIGO" which means "I Lead or I Direct" is a symbol of guidance.
