Description
The New Mexico State Flag consists of two colors red and yellow, the sun in the center with four rays pointing in four directions.
The colors red and yellow represent Old Spain.
The sun in the center or the Zia Sun is a symbol of the State's Native American Pueblo and Nuevo Mexico Hispano background.
The four rays pointing in four directions are a symbol of four points of the compass (north, east, south, and west), four seasons of the year (winter, spring, summer, and autumn), four periods of each day (morning, noon, evening and night), and four seasons of life (childhood, youth, middle years and old age).
