Description

The Michigan State Seal was designed by Lewis Cass, and adopted in June 1835. The Latin phrase "Si Quaeris Peninsulam Amoenam, Circumspice" is Michigan's state motto which means "If you seek a pleasant peninsula, look about you". "E Pluribus Unum" means "From Many, One" or "One From Many" and "Tuebor" means "I Will Defend" and refers to the frontier position of Michigan. It also features the American Eagle symbolizes authority and jurisdiction or control of the United States. The three arrows and olive branch with 13 olives in the Eagle's claws signify that the nation is ready to defend its principles and peace respectively. The 13 olives stand for the first 13 states. In the shield are elk on the left and moose on the right, the state's great animals.
